Madeline McCann Porn "Outrage"

Decima's response to latest news coverage....

If you have visited Decima's website in response to recent media coverage, please take a moment (as you are presumably a well-balanced human being) to have a look at our riposte.

The stats show that having the McCanns or any Maddy McCann story on the front page sells an extra 15,000 copies. The mainstream media, far from realistically furthering the cause (ie. helping to find Maddy and/or create any kind of worthwhile debate in the public interest around the story) are shamelessly exploiting the plight of the McCanns and the name of  Madeline McCann in order to sell papers. This is all too poignant when story headlines get as ridiculous as "Maddy's Bed: Exclusive Pictures" http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/news/article4044.ece

By montaging media pics of the McCanns with pornography, Decima seeks to juxtapose a traditionally and shamelessly exploitative genre with the more socially acceptable but no more or less abhorrant ouvre of the gutter press, and asks the question "what's the difference?"

The only possible motivation for the continued ridiculous coverage of a story which has actually long passed and lets face it was very little to do with the british public in the first place is financial gain. What else could it possibly be, 21 months after the story first appeared?

The tabloid media also have a self-confessed penchant for "building up" celebrity on order to "knock em down" as we saw with the merciless coverage of  Kate & gerry being put in the frame.

The idea of the event was actually set off by Larryn Flynt asking the American Government for a 5 Billion bail out for the porn Industry see http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/jan/08/larry-flynt-porn-industry-bailout

The Madeline McCann Element of the event was meant to be a way of showing how the tabloid press use attractive females in news stories such as Kate McCann and also 'Foxy Knoxy' (we hear little about her male co-accused) in order to fill their pages which are becoming more and more pornographic in content filled with attractive females in order to sell more papers almost turning the papers into little more than a glamour magazines, the Sunday Sport we think sums up where the tabloids are going or have been going for many many years, eg see copies fo the mirror/sun from the 50's 60's and compare them to todays.

We were just taking this to the extreme. And to those who think we are trying to get cheap publicity, know this:  although we sent out a press release we did only intend to send to mailing list contacts and not press/ We did not realise we had actually sent it to any media as it was just meant to be a experiment into how people on the mailing list would react to the concept, and to spark a debate amongst those who did attend the exhibition.

However, now that the story has gone wider, we are hoping that some kind of sensible debate about the media's handling of the Maddy story and other stories might prevail. The main problem with the press, is that they will never sanction debates which involve their own conduct.

However no complaints were received however people were interested in the concept and a interesting discussion about the points above went ahead.
