The Hackney Wick Art Olympics 9th - 24th August 2008

OPENING CEREMONY EXHIBITION AT DECIMA GALLERY 2PM - 6PM SATURDAY 9TH AUGUST 2008 FREE ENTRY FREE DRINKS

To Celebrate the 2008 Beijing Olympics Decima Gallery based on the edge of the 2012 Olympics site has organised the Hackney Wick Art Olympics to run parallel to the Beijing Olympics with events from 9th August to Sunday 24th August , launching in conjunction with 'Hackney Wicked' the first ever art festival in Hackney Wick 8th - 10th August 2008.

 

At the opening Ceremony Artists have been asked to come up with their own alternative Art Olympics Events and demonstrate them. Events Include;

 Piers Wardle's Tossing The Paintbrush Competition

Stephen Micalef's Olympic Poems

Jenny Lindvall Slowest Pint to Mouth Competition

Andrew Hart Throwing the diskcus. Everyone brings the worst 12" record they have and try to throw it as far as possible.

The Launch of  'Save The Lea Tavern Campaign'. (The Closest Pub to the Olympic Park White Post Lane) which is to be knocked down then re-build and turned back into a pub. This is a Building of Historic Interest Decima Artist Byron Pritchard and Stephen Gill are to unveil their artworks based on 'The Lea Tavern'.

Simon Ould will re-create the Olympic Rings with Hula Hooping Girls

  Nick Polavoid's Skateboard Slalom and his Wet T-Shirt Competition for the Ladies

Decima will host Laura May's X-Factor Karaoke with Olympic fancy dress and the Gallery walls will hold blank canvasses inviting visitors to draw or paint their Olympic themed picture, this event which will be Judged by Simon Ould Stephen Gill and Mark Mcgowan, the winner will receive  a Complete Pictures book by Gilbert and George signed 'To the Hackney Wick Art Olympics Love and Luck Gilbert & George' worth £40.00

 

The Decima Art Olympic Committee will unveil the dates and locations of the art Olympic events which will run from 11th August - 24th August. Events will include 

 

Gilbert & George's idea for Bike Polo a event that featured in the 1908 Olympics held in Britain.

 

Sitting around London Fields Lido doing nothing competition, last person to act sporty wins

 

Calum F. Kerr's Pole Vaulting over the Blue Olympic Fence

 

Alex Chappel's Olympic Kebab Eating Competition at the Olympic Kebab Shop Hackney Wick

 

Wine Opening Competition at The Golden Heart Commercial Street E1. 10 people 100 bottles of wine the person to open the most using traditional cork screw wins a bottle of wine.

 

To Celebrate Hackney having the most gun and drugs crime in Britain we will be holding a shooting competition on Hackney's celebrated murder mile.

On Saturday 16th August 6.30pm The Decima Dog's go to the final Day of Walthamstow Greyhound Race's Meet in thre Main Enclosure £7.00 Entry to celebrate Dog's.   Come dressed as a Dog Bark Like a Dog Bet Like a Dog. This is your last chance before the Dog track is knocked down and turned into kennels.

 

Though out the competition their will be random drug tests done on competitors, as Hackney is widely nicknamed Crackney anyone who tests negative will automatically be disqualified. Any round declared a draw, the decision will be decided by the Hackney Gazette Challenge, the first person to find a positive story in the current issue of the Hackney Gazette will be declared the winner, if no positive story can be found the event will be declared void.

 

At 6pm the lighting of the Olympic torch will take place at Decima Gallery and will be lit by celebrated local artist Simon Ould, this  will remain lit throughout the Hackney Wick Olympics then the Hackney Wick Olympic Firework Display. 

All those attending will be able to suggest ideas for Olympic events and join in  'Hackney Wicked' the first ever arts festival in Hackney Wick.
